Description

I know it's not great, but try to see past the crappy execution to the surreal feeling I was going for. This was the first version of what ended up being three attempts. The third is actually quite good and is hanging on my wall. I'd upload it, but I can't figure out how to use a scanner. I'm uploading this one because it was already scanned years ago.

I painted this with watercolors in an art class I took summer 2003. This is a place I see in my mind a lot, and so I tried to bring it to life. The trees are those of the orchards in the town I grew up in. They're very magical. Those are fireflies and will o' the wisps in the foreground. This place is also the setting of my poem "The Ballad of Serenity"

Hope you like it, despite the poor quality. Comments welcome, advice as well.

I can tell this image is really important to you. I wish I could see the third version of it to see how much your skill has improved. I have a few tips for you, but I don't know how relevant they'll be to you now.

The thing that bothers me most about this piece is that it lacks depth. I normally love flat paintings, but if you want to convey a vivid sense of place, depth is generally better. Luckily, this isn't so hard to do. When things get further away, add a little bit of blue or purple to give it atmospheric perspective. In this picture, the grass behind the water should appear more blue than the grass in the foreground to give the illusion of space. The other rule of thumb is to get less detailed the further back you go. In this, you have some delicate tree branches far away, yet the foreground is pretty blurry.

Try adding more layers of analogous colours in order to get the hue you want. This is another way to add a lot of depth and interest to any painting. Light is what affects how we see the world, so if a painting lacks authentic lighting it can seem fake or harder to relate to. This isn't just a matter of making sure the highlights and shadows are in the right places. Layering paints is a really easy way to affect how light hits the surface of the canvas. A flat layer of paint will reflect light uniformly and we perceive it as a flat canvas, but if you work with transparent layers the light wil penetrate each layer differently and we can be tricked into thinking we're looking out a window into the real world.
